20 Devastating Dying Scenes from Our Favorite Movies

1. MARLEY & ME (2008)

All dog owners will agree: seeing Marley pass away from the old age is one of the saddest movie scenes ever. There’s something devastating about dogs, and pets in general, dying in movies. Watching Marley’s journey, from puppyhood to final moments breaks hearts every time.

  1. UP (2009)

When Carl met Ellie it was the love at first sight. When Car lost Ellie, it was a heartbreaking, core-shaking, mindblowing scene. Seeing someone lose the love of his life brings waterfalls of tears. The bare thought of Ellie being Carl’s trigger to start the adventure they both wanted to live makes this one of the hardest movies to watch.

  1. THE NOTEBOOK (2004)

Considered one of the most romantic stories ever, The Notebook had us chained to our seats the entire movie. At least two boxes of tissues were used, but the movie finale… There were not enough tissues in the world to see both Noah and Alie die together in their sleep.

  1. THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS (2008)

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a story of friendship that knows no boundaries. Set in the World War II, the plot follows Bruno and Schmuel’s incredible connection which doesn’t break even when they both enter the gas chamber holding hands. A story of holocaust brought to another, a much harder to process level.

  1. LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (1997)

To his son, the war was not a war, instead of a big game, he played with his father. But for Guido, the war was a terrible destiny he had to take with a smile. A game of hide and seek ends tragically when Guido gets caught and executed. Even at his final moments, Guido showed bravery for his son and kept the game on.

  1. THE GREEN MILE (1999)

Killing off Bambi’s mother is one of the biggest crimes Disney’s ever done. The mere thought of Bambi being a little fawn, lost and alone without his mom, breaks hearts. Yes, it did make him strong to stand up for himself and become the new Great Prince. It was a high price to pay.

  1. MY GIRL (1991)

When an innocent character loses the life, it’s always difficult to process it. Vada and Thomas J’s lovely relationship from MY GIRL never looked like it could end in a tragedy. Love makes us do crazy things, and sometimes it costs the life. Seeing Thomas J return for Vada’s mood ring and getting stabbed to death by hornets is one of the most terrible death scenes ever made.

  1. HACHI: A DOG’S TALE (2009)

There are no creatures more loyal than dogs. Hachiko proved that love continues even after death. This movie had two shaking deaths: the owner and the dog’s. Name something more disturbing than seeing that poor dog waiting every day for a train and a man that won’t come.

  1. THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2 (2015)

So many characters were killed off in the Hunger Games franchise, but no one’s death was more horrific than Prim’s. After all that Katniss did to save her sister, it was still for nothing. Her death was so unnecessary, even Katniss’ scene with Buttercup the cat made us miss Prim even more.

  1. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 (2011)

What makes Severus Snape’s death more tragic is the story behind his attitude during the whole series. The love was a motive for everything Snape did, no matter how notorious his behavior might have been. He vowed to protect the son of the woman he always loved-key word always.

  1. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 (2011)

Dobby always wanted to help Harry Potter. This good-spirited house elf wasn’t a major character, but his death left a major impact. The scene of burying Dobby at the beach remains one of the hardest parts of the story for every Potterhead.

  1. INSIDE OUT (2015)

When Bing Bong disappeared, a part of Riley’s life disappeared too. It’s a sad fact seeing someone lose childhood dreams and imagination. The most upsetting part is realizing that it happened to all of us, nevermind the fact it’s just an animated movie.

  1. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENESS (2015)

When the hero of generations got stabbed with a lightsaber, our childhood dreams crushed down. Han Solo’s death was expected, as he couldn’t play this role forever, but it was still difficult. Much like the character, the death scene was one of the greatest.

  1. TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY

Thumbs up never looked sadder. When T-800 disappeared in molten metal, one last sign was given to John: a thumbs up to ensure him everything will be okay. T-800’s death was a sacrifice for the well-being of the entire humankind. Unfortunately, John was left without a guiding figure and we all were shaken to our cores.

  1. WONDER WOMAN (2017)

A love story between Diana (Wonder Woman) and Steve Trevor didn’t get the chance to bloom. Steve went in a heroic manner: hijacking a plane from the Nazi’s and steering it away from London. He saved many people from a terrible destiny and left us wishing he was a superhero who can’t die.

  1. WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017)

We followed Caesar’s path from being a baby chimp to becoming a great ape leader. Caesar didn’t get the chance to enjoy the newfound sanctuary for his tribe, but at least he got the chance to see everyone will be safe there. That was enough for a true leader, but still terribly sad for us, the fans of the trilogy.

  1. LOGAN (2017)

We’re not used to seeing superheroes die. That’s why seeing Logan, aka Wolverine, pass away is one of the saddest movie deaths of 2017. At his dying moment, Logan realized the true meaning of life. At least he’ll get to live on through his cloned daughter, Laura.

  1. THE LION KING (1994)

Oh, Disney, you’ve done it once again. Killing off parents in animated movies isn’t something we all want to see. Seeing Mufasa dying in a terrible accident caused by his own brother is one of the most terrible death scenes ever made. Poor Simba trying to wake up his father scared our childhood forever.

  1. BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (2016)

Whoever thought Superman will end up underground? No one! Even though the death of this superhero might be fake, it was still disturbing to see the raindrops falling on his casket. If anyone can wake up from the dead, it has to be Clark Kent.
